Chapter Twelve

After Uma left, Jerahmy dismissed Wendy, then sank into one of the chairs by the fire and closed his eyes. It had been a horrible couple of days. Yesterday, Asa Bianchi had grilled him, Devlin, Wendy and Victor about the murder victim found in the woods. Though the man had been tortured for several days, the actual murder had taken place late yesterday morning. Luckily, Jerahmy and his employees had alibis. He and Victor had been performing the exorcism in the presence of Madeline and Al, while Devlin and Wendy had been at the institute with a half dozen clients and two part-time workers to act as witnesses.

Today, he found Uma in a tizzy. Yes, the girl infuriated him, yet he couldn’t help being concerned about her. She’d been terribly upset and he knew she’d taken her anger and frustration out on him, yet he wasn’t going to put up with her attitude. She needed to learn how to control herself and her powers and she definitely needed to learn how to show respect to those deserving of it.

Her words regarding him and Morgan also cut deeper than they should, probably due to his own guilt about the blossoming relationship. Dating an employee and the mother of a client was taboo. He never should have given in to his feelings for Morgan, no matter how strong they might be. He also needed to let her know what had gone on between him and Uma today. The girl needed someone to talk to, and if she wouldn’t allow him to help her, then perhaps Morgan or Effie could get through to her.

Sighing, he stood and walked to his desk where he dialed Morgan at the animal clinic.

Halfway home, Uma calmed down a bit and began to realize the magnitude of her mistake. Jerahmy had helped her more than anyone outside of her family. Now, because of what she’d done, he’d probably never see her again. She’d most likely never see Devlin again, either, and she’d learned so much from him as well.

Her heart thumping wildly, she turned and headed back to the institute, though deep inside, she knew any attempt to make amends would be futile.

When she stepped in, Wendy seemed surprised to see her.

“Uma, what can I do for you?” she asked.

“Is Jerahmy still here?”

“Yeah. I can see if he’s busy and—” She paused and glanced down the hall to where Jerahmy had just stepped out of his office. He approached and ignored Uma completely. He actually stood between her and Wendy, his back to her as if she didn’t exist and dropped a folder on the desk.

“File this please, Wendy. I have some paperwork to finish, then I’ll be leaving the office for the night.”

Wendy nodded and her gaze met Uma’s with a touch of sympathy.

“Jerahmy,” Uma said quietly.

He didn’t so much as glance at her and headed down the hall.

“Jerahmy, wait,” she said a bit louder and hurried after him. “I’m sorry about how I acted.
